Casting ‘Sundowning’ a short film based on the themes of grief, family and dementia.

Overview: Joe, after forgetting, has to rush to collect his grandfather, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, before his mother’s funeral starts.’

Treatment:
Harold is an old man, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, and he finds himself crying in his bathroom although he is uncertain about why. He starts to go about his daily routine, but is left confused as his condition has left him uncertain what tasks he has and hasn’t done. Suddenly Harold’s doorbell rings, and upon answering it, he finds his grandson Joe waiting on his porch.

Joe has been struggling with the death of his mother and to avoid dealing with coming to terms with the situation, he smokes a cigarette on a bench before the funeral starts. Joe’s older brother, Mark, comes to find him, supposedly with the intent of checking up on him, but really to ask him where their grandfather is. Although hesitant to acknowledge that he has forgotten to pick him up, Joe eventually admits to his mistake and Mark commands him to rush over and collect their grandfather before the funeral starts.

Back at Harold’s house, Joe is invited in by his oblivious grandfather, who is determined to make him a cup of tea, despite Joe’s insistence that they do not have time. Joe is surprised, upon telling Harold that his daughter has died, with how understanding his grandfather is of the whole situation. Harold goes to get changed for the funeral, leaving Joe downstairs waiting. Joe is struck by how photographs of his mother fill his grandfather’s home, and he starts to fight back his tears.

Harold then suddenly calls out from upstairs, asking who is there. Joe prepares to have to explain the whole situation again, but Harold has managed to piece together what must have happened due to details like him wearing a suit that he only wears to funerals. After Joe panics over the location of Harold’s walking stick, the pair finally leave the house for the funeral.

Upon approaching the church, Harold asks Joe when the funeral starts and Joe realises that they are already late. Joe begins to break down, claiming that he has ruined the funeral and that everyone will now hate him. Harold comforts his grandson, explaining how it is not the end of the world and everyone will understand in the end. Joe composes himself, and the two of them continue onwards to the funeral.

Harold and Joe reach the church entrance and find Mark nervously waiting outside for them. Mark admits that he held up the funeral for Joe, as he didn’t want to go ahead without his brother at his side. The brothers reconcile, and the three men enter the church, and the funeral begins shortly after.
